CHAPTER SIX

Introducing Camille to Molly had been a disaster. Camille had over-reacted about our close encounter with the dean and I figured it was because she didn't know the whole story; that it had been Molly's doing and that I never would have been up there in the first place. I had enjoyed my afternoon with Molly and it didn't feel right to criticize her actions in front of Camille just to make myself look better. I hoped that Camille would understand once I had a chance to explain but a part of me was frustrated that I even had to.

Traffic on the drive to the hotel was heavy and I began to feel anxious that my night with Camille couldn't be salvaged. She had, after all, walked out on me, without even offering to drive me back to my car. As much as I tried to forget what had happened and tried to see her point of view, I felt hurt. Unfortunately, it was just the beginning of a long night.

I found the hotel easily. It was a beautiful modern building with an expansive view of the river. The key card led the elevator to the top floor. For some reason, I knocked first, though there was no answer. When I let myself into the suite I could hear Camille’s voice and when I walked inside, saw that she was pacing the master bedroom while talking heatedly on her phone. Her eyes glanced at me with a vague hint of annoyance before she closed the door between us.

I took a deep breath and put my things on the floor in an inconspicuous pile. Then I walked to the large full length windows to check out the view. I felt the gnaw of apprehension in my belly. Underneath that, I was beginning to feel angry.

I took a few deep breaths and got myself a glass of water. I resolved to let it go and enjoy my time with Camille. After about fifteen minutes, she emerged and sat down in the arm chair to the right of me.

"You're pissed at me, I can tell," I said. "Can we talk about it? I've been dying to see you all week." I put my hand on her leg and felt her flinch. I left it there anyways. Camille's expression was dark but she didn't say anything. "Okay," I said, removing my hand. I was trying hard to keep my voice calm and steady, "I'm guessing that you're upset because of what happened at the school. I wasn't going to tell you about it. I don’t know why Molly brought it up again."

Camille stared at me without saying a word. It was unnerving, so I continued.

"We were a few minutes early for our meeting and it was hot outside. We walked around inside the school. Dean Shepard wasn't in the main office so Molly suggested we go upstairs and check there. I didn't feel right about it, but I went up anyway. He wasn't
